Hulburt Law Firm focuses on serious injury and wrongful death cases where careful investigation, experienced advocacy, and thorough preparation can make a meaningful difference.
We represent people seriously injured by distracted, impaired, speeding, and otherwise negligent drivers, including crashes involving complex questions of fault or insurance coverage.
Motorcycle crashes often cause catastrophic injuries even at relatively low speeds. We represent riders injured by drivers who fail to see them, yield the right of way, or share the road safely.
We represent cyclists seriously injured by negligent drivers, unsafe intersections, dangerous roads, and other hazards, including people injured while riding e-bikes.
Pedestrians have little protection when struck by a vehicle. We handle serious and fatal pedestrian cases involving crosswalks, intersections, distracted driving, and other unsafe driving.
Property owners may be responsible when unsafe conditions cause serious injuries. We handle cases involving falls, inadequate maintenance, dangerous property conditions, and other preventable hazards.
California law provides important protections for people injured by dogs. We represent adults and children who suffer serious bites, scarring, disfigurement, and other dog-related injuries.
Commercial vehicle crashes can involve multiple companies, layers of insurance, and evidence that disappears quickly. We investigate the driver, vehicle, company practices, and other potential causes of the crash.
We represent passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists seriously injured in crashes involving public transit, school buses, shuttles, charter buses, and other passenger vehicles.
We handle serious injuries caused by unsafe operation, collisions, propeller strikes, ejections, and other boating negligence.
We investigate general contractors, subcontractors, property owners, equipment manufacturers, and others whose negligence contributed to the injury.
Aviation cases require careful investigation of the aircraft, operators, maintenance, and other potential causes. We represent people and families in serious and fatal aviation accident claims.
We handle wrongful death cases with particular attention to serious investigation and trial preparation.
Traumatic brain injuries can affect memory, concentration, behavior, employment, relationships, and independence. We work to document both the injury itself and its long-term effect on a client’s life.
We represent people with spinal cord injuries, paralysis, fractures, herniated discs, and other serious spine injuries that may require surgery, rehabilitation, or lifelong care.
Severe burns can cause permanent scarring, disfigurement, nerve damage, and extensive medical needs. We handle burn cases involving vehicles, defective products, electrical hazards, fires, and other causes.
We handle cases involving tires, seat belts, roofs, structural failures, and other automotive defects.
We investigate whether defects in design, manufacturing, or warnings contributed to the harm.
We investigate whether dangerous intersections, roadway design, sight-distance problems, traffic controls, or other roadway conditions contributed to a serious collision.

Tell us what happened and how you were injured. We’ll evaluate the incident, potential defendants, and whether we can help. There is no charge for the consultation.
We preserve evidence, obtain records, interview witnesses, identify responsible parties and insurance coverage, and bring in experts when needed to prove what happened and the full extent of your injuries.
We prepare every case with trial in mind. That allows us to negotiate from a position of strength and take the case to a jury when the responsible parties refuse to provide fair compensation.
Serious injury cases in Coronado can involve issues unique to the city’s roads, bridge traffic, heavy bicycle and pedestrian use, and proximity to state-maintained highways. Here are some of the issues that may arise in a Coronado injury case.
For many people driving to or from Coronado, the San Diego-Coronado Bridge is the primary connection to the mainland. The 2.1-mile State Route 75 bridge has no emergency shoulders and uses a movable median barrier installed in 1993. When traffic slows suddenly or a vehicle becomes disabled, the limited space can complicate an already dangerous situation.
The state’s most recent Office of Traffic Safety crash rankings counted 123 people killed or injured in Coronado in one year, ranking the city 6th of 103 comparable California cities. Coronado also ranked 6th for alcohol-involved crashes and 3rd for motorcyclist victims.
Because the bridge and State Route 75 are maintained by Caltrans, a crash caused in part by a dangerous roadway condition may involve a claim against the state. Personal injury claims against public entities generally must be presented within six months of accrual, making early investigation especially important. Our attorneys have taken on Caltrans before, including obtaining a $28.16 million jury verdict for a child catastrophically injured by a dangerous state crosswalk.

Bicycle safety is a significant issue in Coronado. The state’s most recent crash rankings counted 29 bicyclists killed or injured in one year, ranking Coronado 1st among 103 comparable California cities. Coronado also ranked 1st for bicyclists under age 15, with nine young riders injured.
Coronado has adopted additional rules for e-bikes and other motorized mobility devices. E-bikes are prohibited on city sidewalks, beaches, parks, and several waterfront boardwalks and promenades, and children under 12 may not operate e-bikes in Coronado. A violation does not necessarily eliminate an injury claim; California’s comparative negligence rules can allow recovery even when an injured rider shares responsibility.
Our guides explain what to do after a bicycle accident, California bicycle helmet laws, road hazards that cause bicycle crashes, and California e-bike laws. You can also learn more about our bicycle accident and e-bike accident practices.
Coronado’s walkable streets also place pedestrians close to vehicle traffic. Fifteen pedestrians were killed or injured in the state’s most recent crash-rankings year, placing Coronado 5th among 103 comparable cities. The city ranked 2nd for pedestrian victims under age 15 and 2nd for pedestrians age 65 and older.
Busy areas such as Orange Avenue and streets near Coronado’s beaches and waterfront can bring residents, visitors, cyclists, and drivers together in a limited space. When a pedestrian is seriously injured, determining responsibility may require examining right of way, driver attention, visibility, traffic controls, surveillance footage, and the design of the location where the collision occurred.

Personal injury lawsuits arising in Coronado are generally filed in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, Central Division, at the Hall of Justice, 330 West Broadway in downtown San Diego. Under the court’s local rules, South County civil cases are included in the Central Division, while criminal and adult traffic cases arising in Coronado are handled in the South County Division in Chula Vista.
The Hall of Justice is close to our downtown San Diego office. Although most personal injury cases resolve without trial, preparing a case for litigation and trial is an important part of building settlement value.
Serious injury cases demand careful investigation, experienced judgment, and thorough preparation. Hulburt Law Firm limits the number of cases we accept so we can give each client and each case the attention it deserves.

Clients work directly with Conor and Leslie Hulburt throughout their case, with clear communication and personal attention.
We are committed to helping clients recover full compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and long-term impacts after serious injuries.
A catastrophic injury is a severe injury, such as a traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or severe burn, that results in long-term or permanent disability and significantly changes a person’s ability to work or live independently.
You may be able to recover medical expenses, lost wages, future care costs, and compensation for pain and suffering and other losses caused by the injury. Our guide to compensation for personal injury victims explains the different categories of damages.
Most California personal injury lawsuits must be filed within two years of the injury. Claims against public entities, including Caltrans and the City of Coronado, generally require a government claim within six months. Our guide to the statute of limitations explains these deadlines and important exceptions.
Often another driver, but not always the other driver alone. The Coronado Bridge is part of State Route 75 and is maintained by Caltrans, so if a dangerous roadway condition contributed to the crash, there may also be a claim against the state. Those claims generally must begin with a government claim within six months. Our guide to suing the government over a dangerous road explains the process.
Coronado ranks 1st among 103 comparable California cities for bicyclists under age 15 killed or injured, with nine young riders injured in the state’s most recent rankings. California requires bicycle riders under 18 to wear a helmet, but failing to wear one does not automatically defeat an injury claim.
A child’s ordinary personal injury statute of limitations is generally tolled during minority, but that tolling rule does not apply to the six-month government-claim requirement. A settlement of a child’s injury claim may also require court approval. Start with our guide to California bicycle helmet laws.
Yes, but Coronado has additional local restrictions. E-bikes may be ridden on roadways, bike lanes, bike paths, and other established routes, but they are prohibited on city sidewalks, beaches, parks, and several waterfront boardwalks and promenades. Children under 12 may not operate an e-bike in Coronado.
Violating a local riding rule does not automatically bar an injury claim, although it may become an issue in determining comparative fault. See our guide to California e-bike laws and our e-bike accident practice.
It can be. If the crash was caused by a federal employee acting within the scope of federal employment, the claim may proceed under the Federal Tort Claims Act, which generally requires an administrative claim before a lawsuit can be filed and has its own deadlines. If a service member was acting outside the scope of federal employment, different rules may apply. An attorney can determine which defendants, insurance coverage, and claim procedures apply.
Hulburt Law Firm handles personal injury and wrongful death cases on a contingency fee basis. You pay no upfront attorney fee and no attorney fee unless we recover compensation for you. Our guide to contingency fees and costs explains how contingency fees and case costs work.
