Tell us what happened and how you were injured. We’ll evaluate the incident, potential defendants, and whether we can help. There is no charge for the consultation.
We preserve evidence, obtain records, interview witnesses, identify responsible parties and insurance coverage, and bring in experts when needed to prove what happened and the full extent of your injuries.
We prepare every case with trial in mind. That allows us to negotiate from a position of strength and take the case to a jury when the responsible parties refuse to provide fair compensation.
Serious injury cases in Santee often involve questions that are specific to the city, including where a crash happened, which agency investigated it, whether a roadway condition contributed, and where a lawsuit must be filed.
Santee’s Local Roadway Safety Plan identified several recurring collision locations on city streets. Mission Gorge Road at Cuyamaca Street ranked first among Santee intersections for crash severity, followed by Magnolia Avenue at Mission Gorge Road, Magnolia Avenue at Woodside Avenue, and Mission Gorge Road at Carlton Hills Boulevard.
The plan found that unsafe speed, improper turning, failure to yield, and impaired driving were among the leading causes of crashes. Broadside and rear-end collisions were the most common crash types.
Mission Gorge Road is an especially important corridor. The segment between the SR-52 off-ramp and Cuyamaca Street recorded more collisions than any other roadway segment studied by the City. Serious crashes can also occur on Cuyamaca Street, Magnolia Avenue, Carlton Hills Boulevard, Mast Boulevard, and the roads connecting Santee to SR-52 and SR-67.
Our attorneys investigate serious car crashes by examining physical evidence, photographs and video, vehicle data, witness accounts, roadway conditions, and the conduct of every potentially responsible party.

State Route 52 ends in Santee at State Route 67, creating one of East County’s busiest highway connections. SR-52 carries roughly 76,000 to 86,000 vehicles a day through Santee, while SR-67 carries about 96,000 vehicles a day just south of the interchange.
Who investigates the crash depends on where it happened. Collisions on Santee city streets are generally investigated by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, because Santee does not have its own police department. Crashes on SR-52 and SR-67 are investigated by the California Highway Patrol.
That distinction can matter when obtaining reports, preserving evidence, and determining whether a roadway condition contributed to the collision. If a dangerous condition on a state highway played a role, a claim against Caltrans may be available, but California’s government claim deadlines are much shorter than the ordinary personal injury statute of limitations.
Our guide to suing the government for a dangerous road explains how those claims work.
Santee injury cases are not generally heard at the East County courthouse in El Cajon. Although Santee ZIP codes are assigned to the court’s East County Division, San Diego Superior Court rules consolidate personal injury and other general civil cases from East and South County into the Central Division. Those cases are heard at the Hall of Justice, 330 West Broadway in downtown San Diego.
The El Cajon courthouse handles civil restraining orders, along with criminal, family, and juvenile matters, but not ordinary personal injury lawsuits. For Santee clients, that means the practical course of a lawsuit, from filing through motions and trial, runs through the downtown civil courts.
Most injury cases resolve before trial, but we prepare every serious case from the beginning with trial in mind.
Hulburt Law Firm is built to handle serious cases differently. We accept a limited number of clients so we can investigate each case thoroughly, stay directly involved, and prepare from the beginning as though the case may ultimately be tried.

A catastrophic injury is a severe injury that causes long-term or permanent disability and significantly changes a person’s ability to work, live independently, or care for themselves. Examples include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, severe burns, and other life-changing injuries.
Most California personal injury lawsuits must be filed within two years of the injury. Claims against public entities, including Caltrans, the County of San Diego, and the City of Santee, generally require a government claim within six months.
Our guide to the California personal injury statute of limitations explains these deadlines and important exceptions.
Depending on the case, compensation may include medical expenses, lost income, future care costs, loss of earning capacity, and damages for pain, suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life.
Our guide to personal injury compensation explains the major categories of damages.
Hulburt Law Firm handles personal injury cases on a contingency fee basis. You pay no attorney fee upfront, and no attorney fee unless we recover compensation for you.
Our guide to contingency fees and case costs explains how the arrangement works.
Generally, no. Although Santee ZIP codes fall within the court’s East County Division, San Diego Superior Court consolidates personal injury and other general civil cases from East and South County into the Central Division.
Those cases are heard at the Hall of Justice on West Broadway in downtown San Diego. The East County courthouse in El Cajon handles civil restraining orders and other matters, but not ordinary personal injury lawsuits.
The overall numbers do not show a steady increase. California Office of Traffic Safety data recorded 90 people killed or injured in Santee in 2021, 76 in 2022, and 94 in 2023.
Some categories are more concerning. Alcohol-involved victims increased from 5 in 2021 to 13 in 2022 and 22 in 2023. Fatal and injury hit-and-run collisions also increased to 11 in 2023 after being recorded at 2 in each of the prior two years.
Our guide to hit-and-run pedestrian accidents explains what to do when a driver leaves the scene.
It depends on where the collision occurred. Santee does not have its own police department, so crashes on city streets such as Mission Gorge Road, Cuyamaca Street, and Magnolia Avenue are generally investigated by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Crashes on SR-52 and SR-67 are generally investigated by the California Highway Patrol. Identifying the correct agency is important when requesting reports and preserving evidence.
Our guide to what to do after a car accident covers the steps that can help protect a claim.
The closest emergency room is not always the appropriate destination for a patient with major trauma. Sharp Grossmont Hospital is not a designated trauma center, so patients who meet trauma criteria may be transported to a designated trauma center elsewhere in San Diego County.
Children with serious traumatic injuries may be transported to Rady Children’s Hospital, the county’s pediatric trauma center. The hospital chosen by emergency personnel does not limit an injured person’s right to pursue compensation.
A pedestrian injured by a negligent driver may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost income, and other damages. These cases often turn on right of way, visibility, driver attention, speed, and the circumstances of the crossing.
A pedestrian who was outside a marked crosswalk is not automatically barred from recovering compensation. California follows comparative negligence, which means compensation can be reduced according to each party’s share of fault.
Our guide to comparative negligence in pedestrian cases explains how the rule works.
